In first grade, many students are still learning to use the reading strategies taught in Kindergarten. These strategies are: look at the pictures, get your mouth ready for the beginning sound, tap the word out to hear the sounds, chunk and chop-can you find little words inside a bigger word or word families?, skip a word and come back, does it make sense?
Comprehension is key in first grade. Understanding what is read is just as important as learning how to read the words. Students respond either orally or in writing to answer questions about stories/articles read in class and need to think about what is read.
